On a boat, their function is not just to “fill” a joint: they also help maintain watertightness in sensitive areas, reduce the risk of water ingress, and improve the finish of installations and repairs. Choosing the right product makes the difference between a long-lasting seal and a repair that will need to be repeated sooner than expected.

Which silicone sealants should you choose according to the application?

Not all silicone sealants perform the same way or are intended for the same use. In boating, it is common to find neutral silicones, acetoxy silicones, or formulations specifically designed for marine environments. The most recommended for boats are those that offer good resistance to UV rays, continuous moisture, and outdoor aging.

To seal hatches, portholes, profiles, partitions, or small joints in interior and exterior areas, it is advisable to choose a flexible sealant with good adhesion. In bathrooms, kitchens, or damp compartments, it is also useful to choose a product with mold resistance. For applications exposed to sunlight and saltwater, a marine-grade or high-performance silicone is preferable, capable of maintaining elasticity without cracking.

The format also matters. Cartridges are the most common option for application with a caulking gun and are suitable for medium or large jobs. Small tubes are practical for quick repairs or fast onboard maintenance. If space is limited or precise application is required, a compact format makes the job much easier.

What should you check before buying silicone sealants?

Before choosing silicone sealants, it is important to review several key points:

  1. Surface type and product compatibility: Not all silicones adhere equally well to fiberglass, glass, aluminum, stainless steel, plastics, or varnished wood. An incompatible sealant may peel off, lose elasticity, or make future repairs more difficult.
  2. Area exposure: interior or exterior use, occasional or continuous contact with water, sunlight exposure, vibrations, and structural movement. During navigation, many joints are subjected to small twists and expansions, so sealant elasticity is essential.
  3. Curing time: If you need a quick repair in port or during a short stop, you will benefit from a product with a reasonable drying time and easy application. Also check whether it can be painted, as many silicones are not paintable. And of course, pay attention to the color: transparent, white, black, or gray, depending on the finish you want.

Which silicone sealants are suitable depending on the material?

Silicone sealants should also be selected according to the material they will be applied to:

- Glass and acrylic: the key factor is good adhesion without damaging transparency or creating stress.

- Aluminum and stainless steel: It is important to choose a sealant that withstands environmental corrosion well and keeps the joint stable despite exposure to salt residue.

- Fiberglass or gelcoat: It is advisable to use a product that adheres properly and does not leave excessive staining.

- Technical plastics, rubber, and synthetic materials: It is always recommended to check the manufacturer’s compatibility guidelines, as some surfaces require specific formulations.

- Wood or varnished areas: The key point is that the sealant can accommodate expansion and contraction without losing watertightness.

In general, the harsher the marine environment, the more important it becomes to choose a silicone with good chemical resistance, UV stability, and long-lasting elasticity.

When should you remove and replace silicone sealants on a boat?

Boat silicone sealants should be inspected periodically, especially around portholes, inspection hatches, hardware bases, deck joints, and damp interior areas. They should be replaced when cracks, loss of elasticity, peeling, severe discoloration, or leaks appear. If the joint feels hardened to the touch or if the seal no longer follows the movement of the part, it is time to replace it.

Before applying a new sealant, it is best to completely remove old residue, thoroughly clean and degrease the surface, and respect the drying times. Proper preparation is often just as important as the quality of the product itself. This results in a cleaner, more durable, and more reliable seal for everyday use.
